Inspecting Your Rumi Tile Delivery Rumi tiles are delicate. Depending on the handling method and frequency, they are prone to scratching, chipping, and cracking. During transit, there is always a possibility that a small percentage of the tiles may incur damage.

Visible Damage: As the recipient, it is your responsibility to document any visible damage on all copies of the proof of delivery or on the driver's handheld device. Request an Additional Services Form from the driver noting the damage, and take several photos before unpacking the shipment. Promptly notify Rumi Tile of any damage by emailing hello@rumitile.com, providing a description and accompanying photos.

Concealed Damage: Any concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. Retain all packaging materials and immediately inform Rumi Tile of the damage by emailing hello@rumitile.com, including a description and photos. Please note that failure to report damage within 24 hours will invalidate freight insurance coverage and replacement eligibility.

Store your tiles in a dry location and ensure the boxes remain dry.

Imperfections Due to the use of raw materials and traditional craftsmanship in creating Rumi tiles, expect variations such as pitted surfaces, cracks, crazing, iron spots, or minor chips. These imperfections define the authenticity of our handmade Rumi tiles, with each piece being unique. The differences in size, shape, and finish contribute to Rumi's distinctive charm.

Installing Rumi Tile When following installation instructions diligently, working with Rumi tiles can be an excellent DIY project. For larger or more complex installations involving intricate cuts or significant substrate imperfections, it is advisable to engage a professional tile installer recommended by Rumi Tile. Before installation, wipe tiles clean of dust and debris using a damp cloth. Install tiles on a stable surface with a subfloor membrane or substrate. Rumi Tile suggests using Schluter Systems Ditra or equivalent products for wall installations, employing appropriate setting materials to prevent tiles from slipping or sagging. For a cohesive appearance, opt for a butt-jointed installation method for Rumi tiles. Due to their irregular shapes, some tiles will touch while others may not, enhancing Rumi's aesthetic appeal. Wedge-shaped spacers can assist in leveling tiles where needed. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's guidelines carefully. To achieve a harmonious blend of colors and imperfections, mix tiles from different boxes throughout the installation process. In hot, dry climates, briefly soak each tile in water (1-2 minutes) to prevent premature drying of the thinset. Apply thin-set evenly over the substrate using a 1/4" x 1/4" square notched trowel, ensuring thorough combing with the notched side. Use wedge-shaped spacers for consistent spacing. Embrace the irregularity of Rumi tiles, knowing that grout lines will vary naturally.

Cutting Rumi Tile can be accomplished using a wet saw with a diamond blade or a grinder for smaller projects.

Grouting Rumi Tile Rumi Tile recommends using Custom Prism polymer-modified grout or an equivalent unsanded grout. Follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely. Allow the thin-set to cure for the recommended duration per the manufacturer's specifications. Ensure the tile surface and joints are free from debris before grouting. Apply grout using a tile float at a 45-degree angle, working diagonally across the tiles. Ensure all grout joints are fully filled and remove excess grout promptly. Allow to dry for 10-20 minutes. Using a damp grouting sponge, gently wipe tiles in a circular motion to achieve a smooth, consistent grout line. Allow to dry for 10-20 minutes before wiping again with fresh circular motions, rotating the sponge after each wipe. Once the grout begins to dry, use a damp microfiber cloth to buff away any remaining grout residue from the tile surface. Rinse the cloth frequently and use each side only once.

Watch out for Grout Haze! This thin layer of dried grout on the tile surface must be thoroughly wiped away during installation. Buff the tile tops with a soft cloth to eliminate any lingering residue. Once the grout has fully dried overnight, it becomes challenging to remove grout haze without a commercial grout haze remover.

Maintenance: General Care Maintaining properly installed Rumi tiles requires minimal effort beyond regular cleaning. Follow these tips to preserve your tile's beauty: Immediately wipe up spills to prevent staining. Keep the tile surface free of dirt to avoid scratches from abrasive particles. For routine cleaning, use a damp cloth, sponge, or mop with a mild stone cleaner or soap recommended for tiles. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives.

Maintenance: Refinishing Your Tile Surface With proper care, Rumi tile surfaces typically do not require resurfacing or refinishing. For major repairs, deep cleaning, or addressing grout haze or coatings, consult a licensed professional or resurfacing contractor recommended by Rumi Tile.
